courier them? check that they're alive before you sign for them.

WW;
They will be fine.
The suppliers will fill the bag with oxygen for the trip and aclimatisation period when you get them home.
I get fish from livefish.com and they are air freighted down from Childers in FNQ to here in Mount Crosby (Brisbane West) for about 12 hours or so and they arrive fine in the oxygen filled plastic bags and inside an EPS brocolli box!
They guarantee 100% live delivery, so the system works.
I have also driven 200 Jades for about 3 hours from SEQFish and they all arrived home safe and sound, only to be killed later by lack of DO and water quality issues by me! not the transport.

Cheers IanK

Hey WW,

I picked up 10 trout a few weeks ago from the Ferguson Valley and drove them back to Perth. They were in about 20Ltrs of water with a battery operated air pump and one small airstone (cost $15 from pet store). It was about three hours by the time we got them in the tank and they were fine.

With the new Mandurah Bypass I thought you'd be able to do it in well under 3 hrs.

Cheers, Yabbies.

Not like the guy they got on the first day they opened the bypass, they put three speed cameras between Baldivis and Bunbury and they got him three times, supposedly over 140k's each time... obviously not real sharp that fella! :24locos:

Wally,

I transported fish in a cooler for a seven hour trip. I have a 12V air compressor in the car just in case I have a slow tire leak. I stopped every couple of hours and blasted some air into the cooler. All made it home safe and sound.

I got some 50 fish from Childers delivered for about $20.
They all arrived alive despite me not getting the bag open till about 5pm on thursay after a wednesday dispatch (fish arrived about 10:30 am thu).
I would certainly not bother driving there to save $20 or so in shipping. You'll be up for heaps in fuel.

Oh sorry for the dual post, I live in North Brisbane (Burpengary).
That info would have helped.

Hi All,
Clarification time!
Livefish.com operate from near Childers in QLD (Yes, Dave, in Central QLD not FNQ, but to me, anything north of Maroochydore is Far North!!)
Livefish get their stock from Ausyfish. I have found dealing direct with Ausyfish extremely frustrating and they only want large orders. livefish have given excellent service, reasonable prices and they happily supply lots of 20-25 per order. With their specials combined with free delivery, why would you bother going anywhere else.
My last lot of Silvers and Sleepy Cod I got from them are powering along with out any losses since I got my self control sorted out!!
Had my wife's Garden Club out yesterday (in the rain) but they were all fascinated and the usual 'why wasn't I told about this before!" was pretty abundant. Have 2 families coming back for further investigation!
I was also gifted 6 small Bristle nose Cat fish by a friend who breeds them (and Pleco's) put them in the MegaBin tank with the Gold Fish and the Silvers. They seem to live under the Pump!! without getting sucked in, great little tank wall cleaners . . . even saw one sucking it's way all over the Float for the Pump quite happy!

Cheers IanK. :p

I haven't done it, but the man I used to buy tropical fish from for aquarium, said they put some hydrogen peroxide H2O2 in bags with fish for transport.

Hi Ian,

Which do you think are better tank cleaners, the bristle noses or pleco's?

I 've had bristle noses for my tropical tank and boy do they keep that spick and span. The pleco's down here cost about $60.00 for a 25-50 mm one,bit over the top for me.

Bristle noses are about $10-15 for the same size.

Cheers.

I never thought of Bristlenoses outside before. Will the overwinter in a pond in brisbane? I guess the only problem is getting big enough ones for a good price.

Hi Peterk,

Can you clarify this one:

I haven't done it, but the man I used to buy tropical fish from for aquarium, said they put some hydrogen peroxide H2O2 in bags with fish for transport.

How did he do that?... not in the water I hope!

Cheers, Yabbies

Curiosity got the better of me, so I Googled the use of Hydrogen Peroxide (H2O2) in transporting fish. It can be done, I knew that H2O2 produced oxygen when added to water containing organic matter, but I didn’t think it would gas off from the water in such a volume so as to be usable… you learn something everyday. :genius:

A separate plastic bag containing water and an organic catalyst (ie: crushed fish liver) has H2O2 added to the water, as the H2O2 breaks down the organic matter it produces Oxygen, which is then piped directly into the water in the bag containing the fish. But you have to be very careful that none of the water containing the H2O2 gets into the bag containing the fish.

The following link gives an explanation and diagram.

It’s good to know there’s an alternative, but IMO a portable battery operated air pump and air stone for $15 is a safer option. It costs $15 once, but you can use it over and over.

That explains it, he said they used it , I didn't ask how. Glad you found that out, I've killed fish before, but never with disinfectant.... Pete

BD,

I'm not in a position to say. Monty was going to give me Plecos but they weren't ready yet, so he gave me the little Bristle nose instead. The water temperature is around 23C at the moment and they seem quite happy (as do the Silvers). I don't know how they will take the lower temps over Winter, but they will be a bit bigger by then, so we'll have to suck it and see. They are only about 25mm long now but seem to get around the tank OK.
Yes, Plecos are expensive, so I hope Monty comes to the party and gifts me a couple of those in the future! They are very good cleaners in an Aquarium with gravel bottoms, so I can only assume they would be bloody good cleaners without the gravel!

CXheers IanK :)
