wondering if anyone has seen the fairly recent cartoon, "Ponyo"?
the relevency is the little boy's boat and how it operates

there are two pipes, one is the intake, the other is the outlet
in the center of the boat, there is a metal plate, under which he has a candle burning, the candle heats the water and creates a fast running syphon, making the boat move

i am wondering if this whole idea would work at all?

if so i am assuming you could do itwith another type of syphon and create a moving grow bed for a single plant or a larger bed, the bed floods and when it drains it pushes water out fastly and creates a motor of sorts

another thing... i once heard of a plant, i will have to try and find the name of it again, been searching, anyway, the roots of this plant apparently reach 140F, twenty below what the center of a thermal compost pile gets, thats where it came up

but what if you used one of these moving grow beds and had one of these heated plants growing int it, the heat would do what the candle does in Ponyo and would act as a free, natural heater for your fish tank

any thoughts?

Not scientific at all, purely logic,

I wonder if that plant would be poisonous for your system. If it was and there were such a plant, then you could grow it outside your grow bed and syphon thingy you are talking about. and let the latent heat developed from the roots, heat up the syphon.

I would think it would be a time consuming process for you to try, but if you are unlike me and are patient enough, I'd loose interest very quickly, there is nothing at all to lose and everything to gain by trying it in or just outside your system.

Cheers.

i would have to look into that

but even without the hot plants in it, i think it'd be pretty fun to watch a moving grow bed take off when it begins to syphon

i was thinking of using a section for trees and have the moving grow beds floating between them... anyway just an idea

These little "pop pop boats" used to be very popular when I lived in Central Java. Sold in the markets for 100 rupiah, all the kids had them.
