I want to say thank you for providing a forum where I can ask questions and learn from reading posts. Prior to my joining the forum I've had some problems with my system as of late. The number one being that my fish or plants were not growing. I even had a peace lily in the grow bed that died during a freeze which I pruned hoping it would recover, but it did not. I used a cheap water testing kit that showed my system had plenty of nitrates, no nitrites, a ph of about 6.2, and a general water hardness that was off the charts. After reading plenty of posts on here I've made some changes to my system, and they seem to be working out well. The first thing that I did was add a primitive form of filtration. The system had been running for 9+ months without any filtration other than the gravel bed. Not like the new form of filtration is state of the art by any means (a sock on the end of the pump hose which I wash every morning and then reattach) still the water has become amazingly clean. The second thing I've done is put about 18 red wigglers (keep in mind my system is running off a 45gal fish tank) into the grow bed. I'm not sure exactly what these worms purpose is? Do they eat dead roots? Should I feed them? Simply with these two changes in a matter of 7 days the peace lily which had been more or less silly puddy has begun to make a recovery and I've attached a picture so you guys can see.

Its about whether to "pot on" or not (particularly, but not exclusively, in a floating raft setup)
As we might all know, the system for growing stuff for dirt gardens is one of starting off the seeds in a small tray, then potting on into a bigger pot, before transfering said (now bigger) seedling into the ground.
Do the same rules apply to seedling raising with aquaponics?
I've seen a few vids and stuff about it, but they never mention how it should be done. The ones i've seen show the small netpots in their compartments with seeds placed in them. Then, the next shot is of the root growth in a near mature plant, to show how great the system works, etc. There doesnt appear to be much info about the inbetween part........if there is any.

My name is Ed and I live in Hawaii. Been wanting to do this for a while, but I'm just staring out in aquaponics and I'm here to read about and gain knowledge on aquaponics. I've been to one class locally, viewed many YouTube videos (Murray's included) and have already purchased 2 IBCs to use in my system. Will be heading out to another AP builder's house this coming Sunday to get more ideas and knowledge before I take a saw to the IBCs.

Wish me luck, aloha!

Here is an interesting vegetable that I recently became aware of. I am becoming increasingly keen to find old style vegetables and the like to see if I can grow some of them.

Here is a photo of ORACH, the purple variant.

Here is an excellent read on this particular vegetable. The great thing about Orach is that it is frost tolerant.

The chart I published a few days back under "Diversity"
is a real challenge to us all to try to find and grow some of those less known veggies. I believe it is becoming a matter of urgency to find and grow, seed save and share as many of these lesser known food plants as at all possible.

I am currently reading a good deal about how aquaponics would work in Australia. Problem is I live in an area of Canada that gets a pretty decent winter.

I would love to see how people have either kept a system going during this time or put it into hibernation. Do you stop feeding the fish as much and just try and keep veg going in a heated green house or what?

I was thinking long term of building a specialized room for the system using rammed earth walls in order to trap and efficiently heat in winter but I am not sure how realistic the winter growing option is.

I guess what I am looking for is to find a year in aquaponics diary or blog from someone living in the frozen north. Cheers

We introduced worms into our growbeds immediately after planting our first crops. the have seriously multiplied beyond a doubt, now we seem to be having a problem with too many worms, and all the worm poo (worm castings) they leave in the growbed. it is too the point where the entire gb are filling up with the black worm castings. we stir up the media beds to wash the stones off, and the sump tanks fill up with this worm waste. they are definitely feeding on the biowaste from the fish tanks and slime, root zones.

I am wondering has anyone else come to the conclusion they have too many worms.

another interesting thing happened, one of the beds while used to have worms, are all gone. why would this occur?

all other beds are filled with them.

Greetings !

Can anyone with experience with Hydroton as growing media, tell me if it is okay to use 4 mm mixed up to 20 mm in size. These seem to be the only size of Hydroton in 50 Litre bags I can get, something about the plant shut down because their was a spike in sodium readings ? I still haven't got to the bottom of that story yet,My main concern is 4 mm will be a nightmare and clog all my holes in the bell siphon?
Maybe I am wrong, Please if someone knows for sure can you let me know ?

Thank you. All the best
