    Default Mixed tanks

I'm brand new to this so apologise if I'm asking something incredibly stupid. Planning on setting up in the Blue Mountains of Sydney. Was going to start with Silvers & a few yabbies. But was wondering if anyone ever mixes fish species, or are they always kept in separate tanks? - i.e can I put trout in with silvers, and at what point do fingerlings become safe when mixed in with larger fish?

When they're bigger than the larger fishes mouth....

Seriously.... it does depend on what fish... and their relative sizes...

For example silver & Jade Perch have relatively small mouths, and literally can't fit most other fish into them...

Having said that, I've seen some hungry, near 1 kg Silvers attack new Eel-tailed Catfish fingerlings about 30mm in size...

Generally Silver & Jade Perch will get along with most things....

Other species, like Barramundi, Murray Cod, Golden Perch... and the larger Eel-tailed Catfish..... have big mouths... and anything smaller than their mouths, including their siblings... will get eaten...

While most aquaculture pellet feeds are very similar, they do vary in protein and fat content... and each has been formulated to species specific amino acid requirements...

Mixed stock of differing sizes may also need differing sized pellet feed... and trying to determine if the smaller pellet is being consumed by the smaller fish , rather than the larger fish... is near impossible

In my experience, mixing trout and Silvers together is not to be recommended.

The trout are so frenetic, hungry and fast growing... that they out compete the Silvers for the feed... and bully and harrass the Silvers to the point of exhaustion...

Silvers and yabbies seem to get along OK, as long as the yabbies have hides, and the Silvers are less than 1kg...

Trout, Barra etc... would eat your yabbies in seconds....

Obviously, it all depends somewhat on relative sizes...but in short.... mixing species generally wouldn't be recommended...
