Thread: how much fish odor in small indoor setup?

Default how much fish odor in small indoor setup?

Been searching and searching and my last question that needs to be answered before I commit to a trial basement setup is how noticeable of a fish odor should I expect? I know the answer depends on how clean/healthy the water stays and how many/what type of fish I have. Just on average though, if well maintained, should expect a lot of fish smell with a small veggie table and fish tank with some Tilapia?

    thanks!

A healthy aquaponics system doesn't have any smell of fish/Ammonia. I have a system indoors right now in my Living room and had another one in my basement in 2010. I never experienced any smell.

Awesome. Just what I (more importantly, the wife ) needed to hear. Thank you.

Completely agree with you. One of my friend had a setup with fishes and it was awesome. It never ever smelled at all. The fishes were healthier than ever i had seen. Best luck and keep going.

If you get ammonia readings of 0 the beneficial bacteria is doing it's job and there will be no bad odors.

    Question Aquaponics in the bedroom?

    Hi all,

I've recently become fascinated with aquaponics.
This is my first post to this forum.

I want to build a small aquaponics system. I live in an apartment so space is limited.
My bedroom has a decent sized east facing window. I want to build the system in front of it. I will also use some artificial lighting.

My questions is Do you see any issues with having the setup about 6 feet from where I sleep?
    Smell, air quality, etc.

    Thanks

You will need to run some aeration at night and the noise may be too much

There is no "safety risk" in terms of bacteria etc, and no smell either, as long as the system is healthy.

The noise of air pumps is not very pleasant, as others suggest, however i too find running water relaxing. So i'm sure you can find a way to make it work.

    And welcome to the forums

    Rob
