I started in Oct 2011 gathering al the info mainly from this website. My set up (Backyard Aquaponics Masterpiece-Johannesburg) can be viewed on the blog page of "myaquaponics.co.za/blog/".
My setup is as follows
1.Flood and Drain system controlled by bell auto-siphon
2.2 x Grow beds, each 1 x 2 metres, constructed from 18mm plywood and coated with pond sealer
3.19 mm crusher stone as grow medium for grow beds
4.2 x 450 litre circular plastic ponds
5.2400 l/h pump in each pond
6.Air compressor to supply air to tanks and grow beds via airstone and perforated tube 25mm from the bottom of grow bed
7.Solar Thermal Expansion Heater fabricated from Class 12 HDPE Irrigation Piping and housed in a box with Polycarb cover sheeting. (Pipe lengths 3m x 6-off)
8.2 x 250 watt heaters to supplement heating when system drops below 22 degrees.
9.55 Tilapia (Mossambicus) per tank, around 20 grams each when we visited
