Default Bunnings/Stratco 500 litre storage container

    Guys

Here in Adelaide (not sure of the other states), we can get green 500 litre containers (84 cm high x 103 dia) with a lid that hold water for about $79. I was going to use this for a CHOP system and specifically this as a sump but have just noticed it says "Not Suitable for drinking water". Pretty sure its the same as what BigDaddy has, but should I be concerned?

I was going to 1/2 bury it so I dont have to have my GB's to high

They would be fine to use, the reason that they are labeled not for drinking water is because they are usually MDPP not HDPP and that means they will have small imperfections on the surface of the plastic that can support bacteria which is not such a bad thing in an AP growbed or tank.

Cheers Daryl - that makes it a heap easier then

Burying 1/2 of it as well to reduce the height would also be ok?

Burying part of it will also help stop the Temp fluctuating to much just make sure that when you backfill its well compacted or you have a drain under the tank so water cant get under the tank or it will pop out of the hole

erich - be VERY careful burying your tank. I did and when it rained it popped out of the ground (twice). Mine was originally buried 600mm. Now is buried 200mm with 400mm above ground (surrounded by retaining wall bricks - looks quite good - like a wishing well). Make sure I keep at least 200mm of water in it to hold it down.

You can see some photos in Members Systems on BYAP.

I wish I had buried my sump,
for the main reason that I would have more drop in the drain pipes from the gbs.
as it is, future growbeds may have their outlets submerged in the sump during high water levels and this may mess with the syphons associated.

    Guys

Just an update - these are fine (bigdaddy and myself use em)

FYI - Bunnings have these on Special until end of this month. I just got 2 @ $58 each (for my Barra when I get em) which is dirt cheap (normally $99)

For BigDaddy - Noarlunga have 12 left, 6 be avail tomorrow
Harvested a stunning amount of fresh vegies since 2008
Harvested 480 rainbow trout to date

Harvested 20 Barramundi to date (hard in Adelaide)

If the siphon will not start there is not enough water flow.....if it will not stop there is too much.
