Seedling Raising System
This is our seedling system. We initally made these for our commercial customers. We now make them available to our regular household clients.
It consists of a 45 hole plastic support , 45 net pots A fiberglass tray that we make up for the job. Vermiculite x 2 grades. Tag sticks. Sample seeds.
Method:- The net pots are 3/4 filled with the course grade vermiculite, then one seed into each. (very economical on seeds) Then just cover the seeds with the fine vermiculite. The fibreglass tray is part filled with water. (Water from the fish tank, or make up a solution of Seasol or similar seaweed extract) Use the wood sticks to tag and date the rows of seeded pots.
The water wicks up into the net pot and keeps the net pot content moist for the duration thus avoiding the need to water with a watering can or whatever from above. Watering from above often dislodges or sinks the seed to far down into the seed raising mixture resulting in poor germination. Trays can be lined up on a flat level bench for the period it takes for the seedling to be ready to go out into the floating raft or NFT or gravel grow bed or regular garden. I took the pix below after dark so it is not that good, but you can get the idea.

Above :- Seedling tray seeded with small lettuce making their appearance. Below:- Multiple trays in full production of fresh seedlings.

Below:- Planting up the seedling trays. Beautiful lettuce growing in the floating raft system.
