Product Details

Built from high-quality fibreglass, this aquaponics swirl filter has a capacity of 750 L (~200 Gal).  Following the formula for efficient operation, it can process a water flow rate of up to 2250 Lph (~600 Gph).

This size filter is therefore suitable for

  • a fish-tank volume of up to 3,375 L (~890 Gal) if using a fish-tank water flow-rate of one fish-tank volume every 90 minutes; that is, a flow rate of 2,250 Lph (~600 Gph); fish types that do well with this include Silver Perch, Jade Perch, Murray Cod, Tilapia, and Catfish.
  • a fish-tank volume of up to 2,250 L (~590 Gal) if using a fish-tank water flow-rate of one fish-tank volume every 60 minutes; that is, a flow rate of 2,250 Lph (~600 Gph); fish types that need this kind of flow include Trout, Salmon and Barramundi.

The tapered bottom (sitting inside the base; you can't see it in the picture) allows easy draining of the solids that are collected.

The inlet coming from the fish tank is arranged so as to promote a clockwise motion of the water entering the filter.  The processed water is extracted from the top middle of the filter.  We can pre-drill the necessary holes ready for Uniseals.

The swirl filter assembly is 1100 mm (3'7") high and 1450 mm (4'9") in diameter.

Manufactured with care in Brisbane, Australia.

A swirl filter or a settlement tank is used in Aquaponics to remove/collect particles of fish waste, other suspended matter and leftover or uneaten fish food. The clean water from the swirl filter/settlement tank flows back to the fish tank via the sump. I (Murray Hallam) prefer to call them a settlement tank, which best describes the function of a swirl filter tank in an aquaponic system.

Clean water benefits the entire system, fish health and plant health.

Only in very small home aquaponic systems would you not have a dedicated filter of some sort and even then, we would have a media bed in a small home system that will, among other functions, act as a system filter.

Typically, you would position the swirl filter or settlement tank between the fish tank and the sump so that you collect the solids that are coming out of the fish tank and stop them from entering into the rest of the system.

This is not to assume that we're going to discard these wonderful sources of nutrients (fish waste).  We will periodically clean them from the bottom of the swirl filter or settlement tank and put them in a mineralisation tank where vigorous bacterial activity will release locked-up nutrients and make them plant-ready for the Aquaponics system.

In a well-designed Aquaponics system, you will have the water flowing from the sump to the fish tank then on to the swirl filter or settlement tank, then back to the sump.

The rest of the system, raft beds and media beds, will be obtaining their water from the sump, from the pump which distributes water by use of a  manifold which will split the flow of water and send it to the various parts of the Aquaponics system.
