Fish must have oxygen, so you need a backup system that will keep the air up to them. They can start to suffer in as little as 20 minutes, and die within an hour, without adequate oxygen. Install a backup system!
If your main pump stops, this neat little backup pump can provide emergency water movement and aeration to the fish tank when properly installed. It needs to be attached to a backup switch that will activate it automatically.
Good quality pump:
To make it safe and easy to put the pump deep into the fish tank, we add an extra metre (~3.3') of waterproof electrical leads, so you end up with 1.7 m (5'7"). This gives you great options for where you can put the pump!
The best location for the pump is right on the bottom of the fish tank. Run a hose from the pump and place the hose outlet above the waterline of the fish tank, aiming it back down towards the water. When the pump runs, a jet of water from the hose will create bubbles, adding oxygen to the water. Vital for the fish! In tanks up to about 3000 L (~800 Gal), this should provide enough emergency aeration to keep your fish alive. But restore the regular air flow as soon as you can!
Taking the water from the bottom of the tank also creates water ciculation, with stale water being replaced by fresher water. However, there will eventually be a build up of ammonia in the water, so get the main water flow running again as soon as possible.
Don't risk your fish! Install a backup system today!
