Seedling Raising Kit

Grow your own seedlings with this simple and easy Seedling Raising Kit!

This is the system we use ourselves here at Practical Aquaponics.  And we always get a really high germination rate with these kits - often 100%.  You can't get better than that!

Works just as well with seed-saving seeds as with commercial ones.  Great for self-sufficiency buffs!

• 45 Net Pots (mini slotted pots)
• 45-hole plastic Frame
• Water-holding Tray
• Vermiculite growing medium - both Fine and Coarse
• Tag sticks
• Sample seeds

• 3/4 fill the net pots with coarse vermiculite
• Place one seed into each pot  (This kit is very economical on seeds!)
• Cover the seeds with fine vermiculite
• Fill the plastic tray with water (Use water from the fish tank, or make up a solution of seaweed extract)
• Use the wooden sticks to tag and date the rows of seeded pots

The water is wicked up into the net pots and keeps the contents moist for the duration of seedling production.  No watering from above - no risk of dislodging the seeds!  Watering from above can drive the seeds too far down into the medium for the seeds to germinate well.  This kit waters from below, so the seeds stay right where you put them - resulting in excellent germination rates!

Once the seedling has developed a few good-sized leaves, it's time to plant it into its final location.  In aquaponics, just shift the whole net pot from the seedling tray to your raft bed, GroTower, or media bed.  Easy!

If you're using the seedlings in a regular dirt garden, just invert the pot and remove the seedling.  You don't need to clean the vermiculite off the roots - it's totally inert and is a good medium for water retention, so go ahead and leave it there!
