The spring really turns the greenhouse into a bushbush, I love this period of the year. Everything grows, smells & the bees' start to buzz.
Made me think of creating this extra growbed outside, disconnected from the system. This one will get the oversized plants from inside the greenhouse.
    P1013021.jpg
In the meanwhile I placed a 2nd fishtank, you thought there was no more space?
    Trouttank.jpg
Approximately 600 Liters and the purpose is: Trout (rainbow).
Lots of currents & fresh water is needed (this one gets continous water from the filter placed on top,
from the floating raft in the back corner (allready filtered water),
and sometimes the drain from the mini-growbed (just on the woodenboard above the heater)
    P1012993.jpg
At the moment still no fish, looking for young Trout but there seems to be a problem here in Holland getting these.
Because of sickness/illness the hatcheries need to get the fish from Germany or whatsoever, will take another month.
    P1013045.jpg
Filter above the TroutTank, now with aeriator for maximum convertion.
Ending now with some nice photo's of the plants, that what we do it for!!

    1 month later May 2015:

    P1013162.jpg

The plants grow very well and absorb lots of nitrate (this level was going down).
Feeding the fish and fertilising the system is a way to make to keep this level in balance.

    P1013076.jpg

One thing we not have in balance (anymore) is the bugs & insects growth, the species who hurt the plants:

    P1013147.jpg

Also lots of cabbage whiteflies, for this I set up an Encarsia System (encarsia formosa/parasitic wasp)
We will let you know the outcome but in a week or so I feel the population of the flies is decreasing.
Couldn't introduce them earlier because of the cold nights, at least 18 celcius is needed.

    P1013110.jpg

The Goldfish & Koi live along; still in search for young Trout..
    Meanwhile the harvesting is started:

Outside the plants also start to get a hold on the weather:

    P1013146.jpg

The plants in the Floating Raft do even better.
We increased the volume/height of the water & added aeriation:

    Update Septembre 2015

    Hello all.
Entering Octobre we can say the weather wasn't like what we've had here last year.
Strong winds, long rainy days and less sunlight, we had to deal with it.
Fortunate enough we decided to have less tomato plants in our system.
This decision created more space for our idea to have more herbs 'n weeds for consumption.
And so far is has been a well pay-off.

    P1013663.JPG
    Vortex
    P1013647.JPG
The capsicum pepperplant is one of the headlines this season, in the middle of the summer I count 100+ hanging there.
    P1013318.JPG
The pepperplant started creating these so called ranks bashing the tomato & cucumbre plants.
    P1013657.JPG
    P1013642.JPG
Some peppers who didn't "look" very well I dried and harvested the seeds from. These are pre-aquaponiced (new word?) and we will see next season.
    P1013623.JPG
The chives through the 2 peppers on the right are garlic chives.. works really well in AP instead of the
original garlic germination (when the fruit may start to rot). Parsley in the right back.
    P1013624.JPG
Rosemary may not be forgotten, also does great from the beginning. Thought having more of these plants will help in the wintertime keeping
the nitrate level within right proportions.
    P1013641.JPG
One basilicum, and not a common one: Lime-Basil.
Tastes' really great and have 2 of them as a test; succeeded! Next year definately more of them :)

The socalled whiteflies are most of them gone. I also added Swirsky mite, who colonised and are now keeping control of bugs.
    Great results:

The tomato plant, like you all know the one who runs best and is easy to maintain!!
    P1013649.JPG
Grapes, the little plant in it's beginning was also in the system. Later on moved it outside and now riping.
    P1013615.JPG
Again thousands of seeds: Portugese Cove. And in the back the Blackberries.

    Really sweet!

More about the peppers 'n the fall later.

    Update Novembre 2016.

As we near the end of the year, I thought of giving an update on how the greenhouse has been doing over the season.

    P1014014.JPG

As you know the size of our greenhouse is for a small backyard and takes like 13 square meters in total with a grow surface like 5 square.
In the spring we decided to remove the old floating raft:

    P1013687.JPG

    P1013690.JPG

We bring in a new system with 3 seperated compartments connected.

    P1013711.JPG

    IMG-20160221-WA0017.jpg

The small tanks are black and with the hood on top of it, the water area is completely dark which is good for the roots.

The outcome is just great. Lettuce Mesclun and Endive do great in our new DWC system!!
The pepper plants in the growbeds are doing the best; this season we have multiple chili and jalapeno plants. Beside these we have the Fatalii Chocolate and Habanero Mustard doing wonderfull with 100's of peppers per plant.

    And ofcourse loads of harvesting!!
At the time we enter November we harvested 800+ peppers from different pepper species.
