All aquaponics systems should have a backup system in place. Fish can start to suffer from low oxygen in as little as 20 minutes, and can start to die within an hour. Make sure you have a backup system to keep water flowing and air entering the water.
This switch is a vital piece of equipment to keep your fish alive in the event of a mains-power failure.
The switch has three connection points - the mains power outlet, the backup pump (12 V or 24 V; not included), and the battery for the pump (also not included).
When the mains power is on, the switch severs the connection between the pump and the battery, preventing the pump from running. You don't need it running if the regular pumps are working.
When the mains power goes out, the switch opens the connection between the pump and the battery, causing the pump to run. (Generally, you will have the backup pump in the bottom of the fish tank with a hose running up to above , so it can move water from the bottom and shoot a jet down onto the top, creating bubbles and thereby adding air to the water.) This is an emergency measure, to keep the fish alive until the mains power can be restored.
If you're serious about protecting your fish, install a backup switch today!
Wired for the Australian electrical system - 230 V, 50 Hz
Will run on 220 V.
Running on higher Hz (eg 60 Hz) may shorten the life of the switch.
NOTE - this listing is for the switch only. To purchase the switch with a backup pump as a kit, go here.
